An Invitation to Join ESU Washington

We'd be honored to have you align yourself with the English-Speaking Union by becoming one of our members. The ESU now girdles the planet, and those who take part in any of its local, regional, and national communities are nourished by a vibrant global network. They mingle with fellow constituents not only from throughout the U.S., and not only from Britain and from Commonwealth nations around the world, but from the dozens of other countries that now boast ESU branches. They attend conferences and launch new ESUs in settings as diverse as Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia. They host visitors from abroad. They play roles in initiatives like A Tale of Three Cities, an effort to develop closer ties among ESU London, ESU Paris, and ESU Washington. When they're in England they enjoy savory treats at Leith's, a charming Chesterfield Hotel restaurant that caters to their culinary whims both in and adjacent to the courtyard of our beautiful Mayfair domicile. They avail themselves of special privileges at nearby clubs, and they receive discount rates at selected lodgings. Meanwhile they participate in any English-Speaking Union activities that happen to be on offer at the time.

In an effort to keep our members alert to the wider dimensions of the English-Speaking Union, we provide those who affiliate with ESU Washington at the Contributor level or above a colorful periodical, ESU News, which comes out six times a year from the organization's Dartmouth House headquarters. And we supply contact numbers for both the London and New York offices on the reverse side of every membership card.

Through an enticing assortment of edifying events, and through such services as the ones described elsewhere in these pages, ESU Washington seeks to extend a precious legacy. To help sustain that legacy and convey it to future generations, all you need to do is supply the detail requested below and submit it in the manner you prefer.

Membership contributions at the Subscriber level are fully tax-deductible. To determine the deductibility of payments at higher levels, members must take the amount they remit and subtract the combined costs of any events for which coupons provided as premiums are deployed.

Like other branches of the English-Speaking Union, ESU Washington transmits a payment of $35 to the National Office for each individual membership, and a payment of $50 for each dual membership. For that reason we encourage those who affiliate with us, particularly at the Subscriber level, to supplement their basic dues payments with fully deductible donations to help offset our administrative expenditures.

In addition to the categories and benefits enumerated above, the ESU also welcomes other forms of involvement and support, among them monetary and in-kind donations, bequests, foundation grants, corporate underwriting, and volunteer activity. For more information about any aspect of ESU Washington, please get in touch with Executive Director Mark Olshaker at (202) 234-4602 or at esuwdc@verizon.net.
